After a long wait the day finally arrived. As per our arrangements, the Bandawe school boarding master came down to Nkhatabay for the shopping. Together with Malita's mum we did the shopping. Malita's mum bought all the food supplements for Malita.
Dopo una lunga attesa, il momento è finalmente arrivato. Come da accordi presi, il Preside della scuola Bandawe è venuto a Nkhatabay per le compere che abbiamo fatto insieme alla mamma di Malita. Lei si è occupata di comprare tutti gli alimenti extra necessari per la figlia.
We then started the journey to Bandawe and arrived there at around 11am. We found 8 parents already waiting for us to check our purchases and verify that everything was done according to the planned budget.
Abbiamo poi iniziato il viaggio verso Bandawe dove siamo arrivati alle 11am. Abbiamo trovato ad aspettardi 8 genitori, pronti a controllare i nostri acquisti e a verificare che tutto fosse stato fatto secondo il budget prestabilito.
Then as a symbol I handed one paper bag containing meat to Malita, a small bag of rice to one of the children and lastly a basin of vegetables to one of the teachers. Then the chairman of the PTA, Mr Kondowe thanked me on behalf of the parents and asked me to send the message to you that your support is not taken for granted. With your help they have a relief as the food is a great concern at the school.
Poi, come gesto simbolico, ho dato a Malita una busta di carta contenente della carne, ad un altro dei bambini un sacco di riso ed una busta di verdure ad uno degli insegnanti. Il Chairman del PTA, Mt Kondowe, mi ha ringraziato a nome dei genitori e mi ha chiesto di inoltrarvi il messaggio che il vostro aiuto non è dato per scontato. Con il vostro aiuto hanno tirato un sospiro di sollievo perché
il cibo è una delle più grosse preoccupazioni per la scuola.
Then the deputy head teacher echoed what the chairman said adding that the school is in a desperate need mainly of food since the government was in a financial mess and they haven't recovered so far. That means insufficient funding to schools. Despite the adjustment of the costs, of most of the goods and items, the government is still giving them the same old funding and sometimes even with a 2 month delays. It is for this reason that the school is always very happy when they receive a donation as this one and they are thankful to Marajowi for the timely donation.
Un altro dei rappresentanti degli insegnanti ha ripetuto quanto detto dal chairman, aggiungendo che la scuola ha un disperato bisogno di cibo, perché lo stato è in seria difficoltà finanziaria da cui non si sono ancora ripresi. Questo significa che non ci sono fondi sufficienti per la scuola. Nonostante l' aumento dei prezzi della maggior parte delle materie prime e dei prodotti, la scuola riceve ancora lo stesso finanziamento e, a volte, anche con 2 mesi di ritardo. È per questa ragione che sono molto felici quando ricevono una donazione come questa e sono molto grati a Marajowi.
They promised to guard the working relationship we have with them jealously so to continue. He appealed to you through me that they hope it is not the last time we will be helping them. Their belief is that whenever there is a small thing to share you will remember them. They emphasized that they don't look for bigger donations, but that anything small is welcome since it will change a life somewhere.
Hanno promesso di rispettare il rapporto di lavoro e la relazione che abbiamo con loro in modo molto serio, per non interromperla. Si sono appellati a me affinché voi continuate ad aiutarli. La loro speranza è che ogni qualvolta ci sia qualche cosa da condividere vi ricorderete di loro. Hanno sottolineato che non sono alla caccia di grosse donazioni, ma che qualsiasi piccolo contributo farà la differenza nella loro vita.
Then it was my turn to say something, although I was not prepared to say anything I just had to do it. My words were that the people who are helping with Marajowi are not rich, but they have a heart of helping so to have joy. As we say in Marajowi, 'Joy is to give it to others' so they give their best for a good cause. So we have to appreciate this by making sure all the time that their donation is given to intended beneficiaries with no abuse of any type and in a proper way and manner. I also said that we at Marajowi are working towards a good working and continuous relationship. "So on behalf of Marajowi, I am happy to donate this food stuffs that has cost about 53.000 kwacha, excluding some expenditures which has enabled everything to be done today". And I asked the parents to monitor the food preparations and the teachers to take care of the food, to make sure that nothing is wasted.
A questo punto è stato il mio turno di dire qualche cosa. Non ero preparato e ho dovuto improvvisare. Le mie parole sono state che le persone che ci stanno aiutando con Marajowi non sono ricche, ma hanno grande cuore. Come diciamo noi a Marajowi, 'la gioia è nel donare al prossimo' così loro danno quello che possono per una buona causa. Dobbiamo quindi apprezzare tutto ciò facendo sempre in modo che le loro donazioni siano date alle persone a cui sono designate, senza abusi di alcun tipo ed in maniera corretta e puntuale. Ho anche detto che lo scopo di Marajowi è quello di stabilire una relazione duratura con la scuola. "Così a nome di Marajowi sono contento di donare questo cibo che è costato circa 53.000 kwacha, escluse altre spese che sono state necessarie per rendere la donazione possibile oggi". E ho chiesto ai genitori di supervisionare la preparazione del cibo e agli insegnanti di conservare bene il cibo per far si che niente vada sprecato.
Again since I will be visiting the school at least twice a week, I will be able to see the progress as well.
And I told them that we are doing all this because of Malita so they have to be sure that she receives the attention she deserves.
Come già detto, visiterò la scuola almeno due volte a settimana e controllerò gli sviluppi con i miei occhi.
Ho anche detto loro che facciamo tutto ciò per Malita e che quindi devono essere sicuri che riceva tutte le attenzioni di cui ha bisogno.
At the end they asked one of the children to say something and through the interpreter she said that on behalf of the children she is happy that after a long time they will have a good meal with rice and beef and that to them it will be like Christmas. She is again sending her appreciation and believing that again they will be remembered so that they will work eagerly in class since they will be in class while full with good food and hopefully they will become fat.
Alla fine hanno chiesto ad una delle studentesse di dire qualche cosa. Attraverso l' interprete ha detto a nome di tutti i bimbi che è contenta che dopo tanto tempo avranno un buon pasto con riso e manzo e che per loro sarà come essere a Natale. Ancora una volta vi manda i suoi ringraziamenti e spera che vi ricorderete di loro più spesso. Lavoreranno con maggiore lena in classe se avranno la pancia piena e con un po' di fortuna ingrasseranno un po'.

30 kg rice / riso: 24.000 Kwa;
10 l oil / oil: 9.000 Kwa;
4 pails usipa (dried fish / pesce essiccato): 7.800 Kwa;
Vegetables / verdure: 600 Kwa;
5 tins mais / latte di mais: 1.850 Kwa;
10 tablets soap / sapone: 250 Kwa;
Spices and salt / spezie e sale: 300 Kwa
TOTAL 53.050 Kwa
Instead of buying so much meat we bought some dried fish so that they can use later since they don't have a place to store fresh food like meat. Again we bought maize instead of plenty rice for Nsima prepared from maize is out staple food and most of us feel like eating Nsima with rice here and there.
Invece che comprare una grande quantità di carne abbiamo comprato del pesce essiccato perché si conserva meglio e alla scuola non hanno un posto dove conservare cibo deperibile come la carne. Abbiamo comprato il mais al posto di tanto riso perché lo Nsima è preparato con il mais ed è il nostro cibo di base e la maggior parte di noi preferisce mangiare lo nsima che non il riso, che invece si mangia di tanto in tanto.
