The Ilala is a motor ship that has plied Lake Malawi in East Africa since 1951. She is operated by Malawi Lake Services and based in Monkey Bay, on the southern end of the lake. Every week the ship crosses the lake all the way north to Chilumba, in the north of Malawi, near Tanzania and then returns to Monkey Bay, 480 km more to the south. She carries both passengers and freight, and calls at major towns on both the malawian and the mozambican coast, as well as at the two inhabited islands of Likom and Chizumulu. While the ship is often late (reportedly by as much as 24h or more) and has sometimes broken down, she remains the most important means of long-distance transport for the people living on the coast of the lake. It is also the only way to reach Mozambique and the islands of the lake. She is 52m long overall, has a gross tonnage of 620 tons and can accomodate up to 365 passengers and 100 tons of cargo.
Nkhata Bay is one of the harbors where the Ilala ferry stops. The day of its arrival (sundays if she is on schedule) is one of the most vibrant ones in town, since there is a big market going on. Now the Ilala is grounded for maintenance till december. The inhabitants are looking for alternative ways to keep on with their business and to reach Likoma and Chizumulu. Everyone is so involved with this that also the children of the shelter represented this for us on different drawings.
L'Ilala è una nave a motore che attraversa il Lago Malawi, nell'Africa dell'est fin dal 1951. Il tutto è controllato dai Malawi Lake Services che hanno la loro sede a Monkey Bay, in Malawi (lungo la riva più a sud del lago). Ogni settimana la nave attraversa il lago da Chilumba, a nord del Malawi, vicino alla Tanzania fino a Monkey Bay (circa 480km più a sud). Trasporta sia merci che passeggeri e si ferma alle principali cittadine delle coste malawiane e mozambicane e alle isole di Likoma e Chizulumu. La nave è molto spesso in ritardo (anche 24h o più) e a volte si è rotta, ma rimane il principale mezzo di trasporto per tragitti a lunga distanza per gli abitanti che vivono lungo la costa con il lago. E' anche l' unico modo per raggiungere il Mozambico e le isole abitate in mezzo al lago. E' lunga 52m, ha un peso lordo di 620 tonnellate e può trasportare fino a 365 passeggeri e 100 tonnellate di merci.
Nkhata Bay è uno dei porti in cui l'Ilala di ferma. Il giorno del suo arrivo (la domenica, se è in orario) è uno dei giorni di più fervente attività all' interno di questa cittadina e c'è anche un grosso mercato. Al momento l'Ilala è stata messa in secca per alcune riparazioni e vi rimarrà fino a dicembre. Gli abitanti stanno cercando modi alternativi per mandare avanti il loro commercio anche con le isole e per mantenere una certa mobilità. La questione è così importante per la vita di ognuno che anche i bambini dello shelter hanno cercato di rappresentare tutto ciò sui loro disegni.
