These last weeks have been rather troublesome for
Marajowi with quite some challenges to be solved in Nkhata Bay. Unfortunately
when you live in total poverty, seeing someone who is lucky enough to have a
sort of a job, makes you jealous, very jealous and sometimes you do anything to
get the luck away from that person. That is exactly what happened in Nkhata
Bay. Thanks to Marajowi, Gresham got a respectable status in his community, he
does not make much money, just enough for a living, but according to the rest
he swims in gold. So the parents of the children involved in Marajowi are
trying to get this gold (too bad there is none!!) and are spreading all sorts
of false gossips around Gresham. This does not get things moving, rather the
opposite. Lately we got a call from Tryness, the old teacher at the old
shelter, informing us that Gresham moved to South Africa. Too bad for her we
knew exactly where he was and we know also he does not even has a passport.
Gresham was in Lilongwe taking care of his daughter (see separate post on the
verdict of the trial). During his absence however the rumor spread so much that
the carpenter building the furniture for the new shelter sold them away. You
can well imagine that all this takes time to get back on track. This is the
reason of the long silence and of the delayed opening of the shelter. However,
things are very slowly going better again and so we believe we will be able to
be online with updates more often. And of course very soon we will announce
again the opening of the shelter.
Queste ultime settimane sono state piuttosto
complesse per Marajowi e ci sono ancora diverse ' gatte da pelare' a Nkhata
Bay. Purtroppo quando si vive in assoluta povertá
se qualcuno é più fortunato di te e ha una sorta di lavoro, si diventa
facilmente gelosi e si vorrebbe prendere il suo posto. Questo é esattamente
quello che é accaduto a Nkhata Bay. Grazie a Marajowi, Gresham ha assunto un
ruolo di rispetto all' interno della sua comunitá. Non guadagna molto, ma in
quantitá sufficiente per vivere. Comunque I genitori dei bimbi che usufruiscono
di Marajowi pensano che nuoti nell' oro e vogliono avere questo oro (peccato
che non esista!!). Per raggiungere il loro scopo stanno diffondendo ogni sorta
di voci su Gresham e questo non aiuta il progetto anzi lo fa rallentare.
Ultimamente abbiamo ricevuto una telefonata da Tryness che ci informava che
Gresham era in Sud Africa. Purtoppo per lei, sapevamo esattamente dove si
trovasse Gresham, a Lilongwe a sistemare delle faccende per sua figlia (vedi
altro post sulla senteza del processo in cui era coinvolto). Tra l' altro
Gresham non ha neanche un passaporto!! Comunque durante la sua permanenza a
Lilongwe, le voci su di lui si sono diffuse talmente tanto che ad esempio il
falegname che stava facendo I mobile per lo shelter, li ha venduti. Potete bene
immaginare che tutto ció ha rallentato un po' tutto, anche l' inaugurazione del
nuovo shelter. Piano piano stiamo cercando di riportare ogni cosa alla normalitá,
ma il tutto richiede tempo. Speriamo comunque di riuscire a pubblicare
ulteriori aggiornamenti nei giorni seguenti
