After a long time we have managed to have some proper news from Bandawe school, where Malita is studying. Lerapie Banda, who is helping us with Malita, is acting as head teacher, since Andrews left the school.
Once again they informed us that Malita is performing well because of the
financial assistance she receives, Being an HIV positive child Malita is prone
to many diseases but the assistance she gets helps to improve her diet and at the same time available clothing
and medication contribute a lot to her good health. All this makes her
attend and concentrate on lessons. She is now attending Standard 2 and we were told she can even pronounce some words. Basically she is enjoying her social life as any other person.
Apparently in this last time period, Malita's mum went to visit her once. However, the teachers seem to be never tired to remind us that we need to make sure Malita will have a proper life also when she will leave the school. Her mum will not be able to support her in any way...
In general, they are trying to have all the students eat proteins twice per week, on Wednesday and on Saturday. They don't manage to buy for them meat as often as they would like, because of scarcity of funds to reach the market and because the number of students has increased again. They want to have everyone eat the same meal and they make sure that when meat is not there they get fish, which is equally good nutritionally.
The money we have sent them for the meat and for the mosquito nets have been received, but not withdrawn yet. The reason for that is that there were no money to get transportation to the bank and also that Andrews (who is still one of the signatories of the school account) was not available. However, they promised us the problem will be solved this weekend and a report with photos will be sent to us. We are looking forward to that!
Dopo un periodo
piuttosto lungo siamo riusciti ad avere qualche notizia più dettagliata da
Bandawe, dove Malita sta studiando. Lerapie Banda, che ci aiuta con Malita, è il
Preside della scuola da quando Andrews ha lasciato l’istituto.
Ci hanno
ancora una volta detto che Malita va bene a scuola soprattutto grazie all’aiuto
finanziario che riceve da Marajowi. A causa dell’HIV Malita si ammala
facilmente, ma l’assistenza che riceve ha permesso di migliorare la sua dieta,
contribuendo positivamente alla sua salute. Inoltre ha vestiti e medicine e
questo le dá una chance in più in classe, dove si deve preoccupare solo dei suo
studi. Ci hanno informato che Malita ora sa pronunciare anche qualche parola e che frequenta lo Standard 2.
La mamma
di Malita è andata a visitarla una volta e gli insegnanti sembrano non
stancarsi mai di ricordarci che dobbiamo assicurarci di poter essere in grado
di prenderci cura di Malita anche una volta che avrá lasciato la scuola. Malita
infatti non potrá mai contare sulla mamma.
Lo staff
della scuola si adopera anche per assicurare che tutti gli studenti abbiano il
giusto apporto di proteine almeno due volte a settimana, il mercoledí ed il
sabato. Putroppo non riescono a comprare la carne tanto spesso quanto
vorrebbero perché non hanno fondi per pagare il trasporto per il mercato e
perché il numero degli studenti è aumentato nuovamente. Comunque, quando non
hanno carne servono a tutti gli studenti pesce, che, dal punto di vista
nutrizionale va quasi ugualmente bene.
I soldi
per la carne e per le zanzariere che abbiamo spedito loro sono arrivati, ma non
hanno ancora potuto ritirarli dalla banca. La ragione è duplice: non hanno i
soldi per il trasporto per arrivare alla banca e Andrews (che è ancora uno dei
firmatari del conto corrente della scuola) non è stato disponibile fino ad ora.
Comunque ci hanno assicurato che entro questo fine settimana ogni cosa verrá
messa in ordine e ci manderanno un resoconto degli acquisti fatti.
