We leave really early and surprisingly reach Bandawe together with our pile of things for Malita in less than 2h. The lessons are already ongoing, but all the attention is immediately diverted to us. This time Malita recognizes Laura and jumps on her neck. Our visit is unexpected, the headmaster and teachers are surprised to see us arriving with the mattress and all the rest, but, as last time, welcome us warmly.
Partiamo molto presto e con nostro stupore raggiungiamo Bandawe insieme al nostro carico di spese in meno di 2h. Le lezioni sono giá iniziate, ma non appena arriviamo tutta l’attenzione si concentra su di noi. Questa volta Malita riconosce Laura e le salta immediatamente al collo. Siamo ospiti inattesi e il preside e gli insegnanti sono molto stupiti di vederci arrivare con il materasso e tutto il resto, ma, come l’altra volta, ci accolgono molto calorosamente.
After the usual greetings, we immediately set off to organize Malita’s bed and we change her into new clothes.
Dopo i soliti convenevoli, andiamo subito a sistemare il nuovo letto di Malita e le cambiamo i vestiti.
Suddenly Malita turns into a very sober mood again, but after some chips and milk and the discovery of ‘soap balloons’ she cheers up again. Moreover we are positively surprised by the fact the she also starts interacting with her schoolmates, who are extremely patient with her. At times she is in fact a bit harsh and does not hesitate to slap them in order to be listened.
Improvvisamente Malita si intristisce di nuovo, ma dopo un po’ di patatine, del latte e la scoperta delle bolle di sapone si rallegra nuovamente. Siamo anche piacevolmente colpiti dal fatto che Malita comincia anche ad interagire con i suoi compagni di classe che sono anche molto pazienti con lei. Malita infatti non esita ad essere manesca con loro pur di farsi ascoltare.
It is time for a new lesson and so we join in the class. There are supposed to be 15 children in Malita’s class, but at the moment they are only 6. The rest could not join yet, since they did not have the money necessary for the transport to Bandawe. The lesson is very interactive and with the very few means the teacher makes a very good job. Also Malita responds to his inputs and is called to the blackboard more than once. The teacher later on explains us that Malita, apart from being deaf and dumb, is also a slow learner, a soft way to say that she is a bit retarded too. Anyhow he thinks that once she is more familiar with the sign language things will start improving significantly.
E’ ora di tornare in classe e decidiamo di unirci agli studenti. I compagni di classe di Malita dovrebbero essere 15, ma al momento ce ne sono solo 6. Gli altri non ci sono ancora perché non hanno i soldi per pagare il biglietto del minibus per Bandawe. La lezione é molto interattiva e, considerando che ha veramente pochi mezzi, l’insegnante sembra fare un ottimo lavoro. Anche Malita interagisce e viene chiamata alla lavagna piú di una volta. Piú tardi l’insegnante ci dice che, secondo lui, Malita oltre ad essere sordo-muta ha ritmi di apprendimento molto lenti, un modo educato per dire che é un po’ ritardata. Comunque lui sembra essere convinto del fatto che non appena riuscirá a padroneggiare meglio il linguaggio dei segni, le cose miglioreranno significativamente.

La lezione alterna momenti che richiedono piú concentrazione a dei piccoli esercizi fisici.
In the meanwhile Malita has familiarized again with Mauro and starts playing with him too. We walk to the fountain for the water, where she happily shows us how to get water and washes her hands before lunch.
Intanto Malita familiarizza di nuovo anche con Mauro e comincia a giocare anche con lui. Insieme andiamo alla fontana, Malita é felice di mostrarci come prendere l’acqua e si lava le mani prima del pranzo.
Since we brought some for her, back in the classroom she gets some rice, she is very eager to eat.
Visto che le abbiamo portato del riso, una volta tornati in classe, ce ne é un piatto pronto per lei. Malita lo divora felicemente.
While we watch her playing further, eat some nsima and happily dance with the schoolmates, we notice that Malita is the only one not really clean and somehow the ‘wildest’ of all the children. Everyone else seems to be very happy too. Maybe her ‘wilderness’ is also the reason why she is not properly taken care of? The impression we get today from the school environment is totally different and much more positive than the one of our first visit. It certainly is a really poor place, but children seems to be glad and are learning. We decide to give it some time and monitor how things will evolve.
Osserviamo Malita mentre gioca, mentre mangia la sua porzione di nsima e balla con i compagni di scuola e notiamo che Malita é quella meno curata, in qualche modo la piú ‘selvaggia’ tra tutti. Gli altri bambini sembrano anche essere molto felici. Forse il suo essere ‘selvaggia’ é anche la ragione del fatto che non é cosí ben curata? L’impressione che abbiamo oggi della scuola e del suo ambiente é completamente diversa e molto piú positiva di quella dell’altro giorno. E’ certamente un posto molto povero, ma i bambini sembrano essere felici e sembrano imparare. Decidiamo di aspettare un po’ e tenere la situazione sotto controllo.
Time to go...Malita at first seems to be willing to come with us, but then she is more interested in her ‘soap balloons’ and gladly walks away with her teacher. We get off to NKhata Bay, next week Gresham will come to check again.
E’ ora di andare….all’inizio Malita sembra intenzionata a seguirci, ma poi preferisce le bolle di sapone e se ne va felicemente insieme alla sua insegnante. Noi torniamo a Nkhata Bay, la settimana prossima Gresham tornerá qui a controllare le sue condizioni ancora una volta.
