Today Gresham spent a day at Bandawe. Here are his impressions:
“I understood that indeed disability is not inability.
Bandawe is only up to Standard 4, but there deaf children cannot be compared with some standard 8 normal children in our local schools.
I started with Malita’s class, Standard I, then went to Standard 4 and finally to Standard 3. In all clases I was amazed by what I say. In Malita’s class although very playful, everyone was involved and taking part. In Standard4 is where the real work is! For instance the teacher just made the signs for my name and the class was able to correctly write my full name on the board.
After that they showed me some traditional dances and comedi.
I was there when they were having lunch.
As usual the whole staff was readily available to make sure that I have captured all what I was looking for. I was also given my sign name. I will show you one day. From now on, whenever I am visiting Bandawe they will be identifying me with that sign. It was fun!”

“Oggi ho compreso che essere disabili non è una menomazione.
Bandawe ha classi solamente fino allo Standard 4, ma questi bambini sordo-muti, sono a volte molto più bravi dei nostri bambini normali dello Standard 8, che frequentano le scuole locali.
Ho iniziato dalla classe di Malita, lo Standard I, poi sono passato allo Standard 4 ed infine allo Standard 3. Sono rimasto piacevolmente colpito da ciò che ho visto in ognuna delle classi. La classe di Malita era ovviamente molto giocosa, ma nonostante ciò tutti i bambini partecipavano attivamente alla lezione. Il vero studio l'ho notato nello Standard 4. Quí per esempio l' insegnante ha mostrato nel linguaggio dei segni il mio nome e la classe è stata in grado di scriverlo correttamente e per intero.
Dopo le lezioni hanno recitato per me delle poesie e hanno ballato delle danze tradizionali.
Ho pranzato con loro.
Come sempre, lo staff si è mostrato molto disponibile a far sí che io avessi tutte le informazioni che mi servivano. Mi hanno anche insegnato il mio nome nel linguaggio dei segni. Un giorno ve lo farò vedere. Da ora in poi, quando visiterò Bandawe sarò identificato con quei segni. E' stata una bella giornata!
