BENJAMIN NYIRENDA is a 10 year old boy living together with his mum Collus Mphande. Benjamin is a learner at St Maria Goretti Primary School where he attends Standard 6. His parents divorced when he was still a baby and since then he did not see his father anymore. Just a few months ago his sister (4 years old) died of epilepsy and his father did not even attend his daughter's funeral ceremony despite the fact that he lives just a few kilometers away. The reason for this is that Mr Nyrenda remarried to another woman, who does not allow him to keep any contact with his previous family.
Benjamin's health is fine, but every now and again he complains about abdominal pains.
His mother Collus takes care of the whole family, which comprises 3 more kids and her old and ill father. However Collus is not working and only depends on seasonal farming and casual work to support her family. When Freighton went to visit her she said "My only worry is on the future of these little children, to me it is fine because I am already grown up". The biggest challenges she faces are related to the opportunity to find necessities for her family and school material for her kids. She believes that poverty is the main cause why her children perform bad at school.
BENJAMIN NYRENDA è un bimbo di 10 anni che vive con sua mamma Collus Mphande. Benjamin studia alla scuola di St. Maria Goretti dove frequenta lo Standard 6. I suoi genitori hanno divorziato quando lui era ancora molto piccolo e da quel momento non ha più avuto contatti con suo padre. Qualche mese fa, la sua sorellina di 4 anni è venuta a mancare a causa di un attacco di epilessia e suo padre non è andato neanche al suo funerale, nonostante il fatto che vive a pochi chilometri di distanza da loro. La ragione di tutto cià è che Mr Nyrenda si è risposato con un'altra donna che non vuole che lui abbia niente a che fare con la sua famiglia precedente.
Benjamin gode di buona salute anche se di tanto in tanto si lamenta per dei dolori addominali.
La mamma di Benjamin, Collus, si occupa dell'intera famiglia che comprende altri 3 bambini ed il loro nonno, vecchio e malato. Collus non ha un lavoro fisso e può contare solamente sui raccolti stagionali e su qualche lavoretto saltuario. Quando Freighton è andato a trovarla gli ha detto " La mia unica preoccupazione è per questi bimbi ancora piccoli, perchè io ormai sono adulta". Il suo problema più grande è garantire alla sua famiglia le necessità principali e anche il materiale scolastico per i figli. Secondo Collus la povertà è la ragione principale per cui i suoi figli vanno male a scuola.
