Gift is 5 and is living in a dilapidated house in an eroded and dirty surrounding together with his mother Ellah, a woman who cannot even take care of herself and that thinks death is much better than life. Ellah used to work up to a couple of years ago, but recently her life changed in a miserable way. She has two children, Gift and Mercy. Gift's father denied any responsibility on his son, leaving Ellah alone. She got married again and got Mercy, but this new marriage did not survive her chronic illness and her husband divorced from her tooking with him Mercy, but not her brother, since he was not his own. Now Ellah and Gift fully depend of Ellah's brother, Martin Kaunda, who is also poor, uneducated and jobless and depends only on occasional farming. Moreover he is a very weak person, with no strong mind on family issues.
Gift is a quiet and polite boy who does not go to school. His mother is too weak to bath him or wash his clothes and all the chores and done by well-wishers. Ellah's only worry is what will happen to Gift if she dies.
Gift ha 5 anni e vive in una casa dilapidata e circondata da sporcizia insieme a sua madre, Ellah, una donna che non è in grado di prendersi cura di se stessa e che pensa che la morte sia la cosa migliore che le possa capitare. Fino ad un paio di anni fa Ellah lavorava, ma poi la sua vita è cambiata drasticamente. Ha due figli Gift e Mercy. Il padre di Gift non ha riconosciuto il figlio e non se ne è preso alcuna responsabilità. Ellah si è poi sposata e ha avuto Mercy, ma a causa della sua malattia cronica è stata lasciata dal marito che ha divorziato da lei, portando con sè Mercy, ma non Gift. Ora Gift e Ellah dipendono completamente dal fratello di Ellan, Martin Kaunda, anche lui estremamente povero, non istruito e disoccupato. Martin può contare solo su dei lavori stagionali, ma non ha una personalità forte e non riesce a risollevare le sorti della famiglia.
Gift è un bimbo taciturno ed educato che non va a scuola. Sua madre è talmente debole che non riesce neanche a lavarlo nè a lavare i suoi vestiti. Tutte le faccende sono fatte da persone di buon cuore. L'unica preoccupazione di Ellah è cosa succederà a Gift se lei non c'è più.
