Katie was born in 2004. She has 2 brothers and 1 sister. Their father divorced her mother long time ago and so she was left alone to bring up all the children. Katie's mum was not working but she was a small business woman in the village. However, at a certain point of her life, she tried to borrow money to boost her financial situation and provide better care to the children. Unfortunately she had little knowledge of the business she was doing and she failed to pay back her loan. Things quickly became worse and at the end she decided to run away leaving her children behind. Now all her children, including Katie, are with her sister who is having a large number of children to look after. In total they are 13, too many for a woman with no job. She only manages to get temporary occupations, as selling Usipa (a small common fish in Lake Malawi) or carrying bricks. All this caused big tensions in the family, especially with her husband, who was not interested in taking care of children who were not his own. Eventually Katie's aunt also left and Katie and her brothers and sister are now living together with her grandmother, an old lady who is struggling enormously with their care.
When she joined the Marajowi project, in early 2015, Katie was in standard 3. Though being an intelligent girl, she was performing very bad at school, since she never had enough to eat, had no school material and every now and then had to help with work.
Katie è nata nel 2004 e ha due fratelli ed una sorella. Suo padre ha lasciato la mamma molto tempo fa e da quel momento questa si è ritrovata da sola a crescere i figli. La mamma di Katie non lavorava ,ma era una commerciante nel villaggio. Ad un certo punto ha chiesto un prestito per migliorare la situazione finanziaria e crescere meglio i figli, ma con le sue poche capacità non è riuscita a ripagare il debito contratto. Le cose sono così via via peggiorate e alla fine la mamma di Katie ha deciso di scappare e di lasciarsi alle spalle tutti i figli. Da quel momento tutti i bambini sono con sua sorella che però si ritrova a doversi occupare di 13 bimbi. Decisamente troppi per una donna disoccupata! La zia di Katie riesce a trovare di tanto in tanto qualche lavoretto, come vendere l'usipa (un pesce molto comune nel Lago Malawi) o trasportare mattoni. Comunque tutto ciò ha creato forti tensioni in famiglia perchè suo marito non era interessato ad occuparsi di figli che non fossero suoi. Alla fine anche la zia è andata via, lasciando Katie ed i suoi fratelli con la nonna, una donna anziana che non riesce a prendersi cura di loro.
Quando è entrata nel progetto Marajowi, a inizio 2015, Katie era nello Standard 3. Nonostante fosse una ragazzina intelligente andava male a scuola, a causa dello scarso nutrimento, del fatto che non aveva materiale scolastico e che di tanto in tanto doveva aiutare nel lavoro.
