When we met him, Ramos Scott Chanza was a 10 years old very lively boy. He was born in Mulanje, but his family moved to Nkhata Bay when his father found a job there as fisherman. As a fisherman he manages to get something for a living, but in the family there are 5 more children other than Ramos and his parents do not manage to care for them all in a proper way. When we met him, Ramos attended the fourth year of a public primary school. However he could hardly read and write. For the last 3 years, he has been attending a boarding school, the Wukani Education Facility, which grants him some more opportunities for the future.
Quando lo abbiamo conosciuto, Ramos Scott Chanza era un bimbo molto vivace dell’età di 10 anni. E’ nato a Mulanje, ma la sua famiglia si è trasferita a Nkhata Bay quando suo padre ha trovato lavoro lì come pescatore. Questo lavoro assicura un piccolo reddito che però non è sufficiente a sostentare sufficientemente Ramos e i suoi 5 fratelli. Quando lo abbiamo conosciuto, Ramos frequentava il quarto anno in una scuola pubblica, ma sapeva a malapena leggere e scrivere. In questi ultimi 3 anni ha frequentato una scuola che gli garantisce anche un alloggio e del cibo, la Wukani Education Facility. Questo gli permetterà di avere qualche possibilità in più nel futuro.
Wukani Education Facility
The school which best suits Ramos's needs is the Wukani Education Facility in Mzuzu. Here he can learn the basic topics, have good teachers and get classes in English too. This is important since all higher education is given in English only. The selected school caters for meals and accommodation and is located in Mzuzu, 50km north of Nkhata Bay. This allows Ramos to keep in touch with his family and community without being taken away from them. In May 2014 Ramos 'graduated' from this school, successfully completing his primary education. During this last year he attended Phewzi Secondary School, a good boarding secondary School in Rumphi.
Per Ramos abbiamo selezionato la Wukani Education Facility. Qui Ramos può imparare le principali materie, avere dei buoni insegnanti e studiare anche l’inglese, il che è importante perchè tutta l'istruzione superiore è solamente in inglese. La scuola si trova a Mzuzu, circa 50km a nord di Nkhata Bay. Ciò permette a Ramos di rimanere in contatto con la sua comunità e la sua famiglia, senza essere allontanato dal suo mondo. Lo scorso maggio 2014, Ramos ha completato con successo gli studi di scuola primaria. L'anno scorso Ramos ha frequentato il primo anno di scuola secondaria alla Phewzi Secondary School, una buon convitto a Rumphi..
