Nell’autunno del 2010 abbiamo trascorso 45 giorni facendo volontariato a Nkhata Bay (Malawi, Africa) e aiutando una organizzazione locale di beneficenza chiamata Chimwemwe Umbrella (Ombrello felice). Attraverso tale organizzazione siamo entrati in contatto con un gruppo di circa 30 bambini vulnerabili (orfani o estremamente poveri) tra i 4 e i 12 anni. In questo periodo ci siamo presi cura di loro tutti i pomeriggi nella ‘shelter school’ dell’organizzazione, insegnando loro le basi dell’inglese attraverso giochi e attività educative.
The shelter school was meant to keep the children off the street in the afternoon after the morning regular school hours. The children we met there are lovely creatures completely abandoned to themselves. The level of education provided by the public schools they attend is less than basic and very often the children barely know how to write even their own names. Moreover they desperately need human contact and care.
La ‘shelter school’ era una struttura di sostegno realizzata per tenere i bambini lontano dalla strada dopo le regolari ore di lezione mattutine. I bambini che abbiamo conosciuto qui sono dolcissimi, ma completamente abbandonati a se stessi. Il livello di istruzione offerto dalle scuole pubbliche che frequentano è estremamente basso. Molti bambini riescono a malapena a scrivere il proprio nome e tutti necessitano disperatamente anche di contatto umano e attenzioni.
This considered, through this blog and with your help, we would like to keep on helping them. The first step is to provide them proper education and good living conditions. It is for this reason that together with a local contact Gresham Agile Ng’ambi, in 2011, we selected the boarding schools which best fulfill the needs of these kids and still allow them to remain in contact with their families and communities.
Per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di continuare ad aiutarli attraverso questo blog e con il vostro sostegno. Il primo passo da compiere è garantire loro un’istruzione seria e condizioni di vita migliori. Insieme ad un contatto locale Gresham Agile Ng’ambi, nel 2011, abbiamo selezionato dei convitti che possano fornire una risposta adeguata alle esigenze di questi bambini e nello stesso tempo permettere loro di rimanere in contatto con le proprie famiglie e comunità di appartenenza.
To start with we selected the 4 children who touched our hearts more deeply: Malita, Ramos, Joyce and Witness (=Marajowi). Today, Gresham left us, and was successfully replaced by Clement, Ramos's old teacher, who is informing us on Ramos, Wit and Joyce, and by Lerapie the headmaster of the school Malita is attending. Today these children are attending proper boarding primary schools. Ramos graduated in 2014 and Witness finished his primary education last summer. Both of them are now attending secondary school. Joyce is still in primary school as well as Malita, but they both made big progresses in the last years. They are extremely happy of the chance which was given them and grateful to all the donors.
In early 2015, thanks to the help of Freighton, we took on board a new girl, Katie. She is not going to a boarding school, like the other children, but to a local one in Nkhata Bay and comes back home every day. Also in this case we support with all what needed for her education and health.

Per iniziare abbiamo scelto i 4 bimbi che ci hanno colpito di più: Malita, Ramos, Joyce and Witness (=Marajowi). Oggi, Gresham ci ha abbandonato, ed è stato sostituito da Clement, un vecchio insegnante di Ramos, che ci informa su Ramoa, Wit e Joyce, e da Lerapie il preside della scuola che Malita frequenta. Questi quattro bambini frequentano buone scuole, Ramos ha completato con successo gli studi primari nel 2014. Quest'anno anche Witness è riuscito a finire ed ora sono entrambi nella scuola secondaria. Joyce e Malita sono ancora nella scuola primaria, ma da quando le abbiamo conosciute hanno fatto passi da gigante. Questi bimbi sono molto felici, si sentono fortunatei per esses stati selezionati e sono estremamente grati a tutti i donatori.
Ad inizio del 2015, grazie all'aiuto di Freighton, abbiamo deciso di aiutare un'altra bimba, Katie. Anche in questo caso, grazie ad un piccolo gruppo di donatrici, la aiutiamo in tutto quello che le serve per ottenere un'istruzione ed una vita salutare.
