In the late morning we reach the Wukani Education Facility in Mzuzu, where Ramos, Joyce and Witness are currently living and studying. Once there we are welcomed by the Principal, the contact person Gresham is referring to all the time. He is a very friendly guy, but still a student himself and so we are soon handed over to the School Manager or Headmaster, another. extremely kind man. He does not hesitate to answer all our questions about the school and its organization, he shows us the school reports of the students, explains to us the reasons for the increase of the school fees and prints out for us their official overview. Finally he introduces us to all the key people of the organization (i.e. the cashier, the teachers, the responsible people for the dormitories etc). After more than one hour we stop bombarding him with all our questions and we head off together for a tour of the school and its facilities.
Nella tarda mattinata raggiungiamo la Wukani Education Facility a Mzuzu, dove si trovano Ramos, Joyce e Witness. Veniamo accolti dal Principale, il contatto primario di Gresham fino a questo momento. Questi é una persona molto cordiale, ma poiché sta ancora studiando, preferisce presentarci al manager della scuola o preside, un’altra persona estremamente gentile. Il preside ascolta e risponde con molta pazienza a tutte le nostre domande sulla scuola e sulla sua organizzazione, ci fa vedere i primi voti degli studenti subito dopo l’ammissione nel precedente anno scolastico, ci spiega il perché dell’aumento delle tariffe scolastiche e non esita a stampare per noi una copia ufficiale di queste ultime. Infine ci presenta a tutte le persone chiave della scuola (es. Il contabile, i professori, i responsabili dei dormitori etc.). Esaurite tutte le domande, iniziamo tutti insieme la visita della scuola.
The first stop is at the boys’ dormitories: 6 different rooms along a corridor. During the day the doors are kept locked to avoid any theft. Their keys are with the guardian of the whole dormitory, a rather friendly boy in his twenties. The students are divided according to their age and sleep in bunk beds. We visit the dormitory shared by Ramos and Witness. It is rather chaotic since the students keep all their belongings packed either at the bottom of the bed or under it. Neither Ramos nor Witness has bed linens, but only thick wooden blankets. Luckily we brought some bed linens for them! Outside the dormitories there are the toilets and showers, which the students are encouraged to take every day.La prima tappa é al dormitorio maschile, un totale di 6 stanze differenti che si aprono lungo un corridoio. Durante il giorno le stanze sono chiuse a chiave per evitare furti, ma un guardiano (un ragazzo di circa 20 anni) é sempre disponibile per aprirle. Gli studenti sono divisi in base all’etá e dormono in letti a castello. Visitiamo la stanza di Ramos e Witness, che, almeno all’apparenza é piuttosto caotica, poiché gli studenti tengono tutti i loro averi impilati in fondo ai letti o sotto di essi. Né Ramos né Witness hanno le lenzuola sul letto, ma solo delle spesse coperte di lana. Per fortuna abbiamo pensato a portare un paio di lenzuola per uno! Subito fuori i dormitori ci sono i bagni e le docce, che gli studenti sono incoraggiati a fare una volta al giorno.
We then proceed to the girls’ dormitories, arranged in exactly the same way and the boys’ ones. Here, there is an apparently very efficient woman, the matron, who takes care of the rooms. Moreover, another nice young lady, Naomi, sleeps in the same room together with the youngest ones, like Joyce, to help them with whatever they may need. Joyce’s room is better kept than the boys’ one and she also has linen on her bed. However she still wets her bed during the night, so we are very glad we brought with us an extra set of bed linens for her.
Proseguiamo la nostra visita andando al dormitorio femminile che é organizzato esattamente come quello dei ragazzi. A controllare il tutto c’é una donna, la matrona, dall’aria molto efficiente. Inoltre, un’altra simpatica ragazza, Naomi, dorme nella stessa stanza delle piú piccine tra cui Joyce, per aiutarle in caso di bisogno. La stanza di Joyce é decisamente piú ordinata di quella dei ragazzi e ci sono anche delle lenzuola sul suo letto. Comunque, la notte Joyce si fa ancora la pipí addosso e quindi siamo molto felici di aver portato un altro set di lenzuola.
It is now time to go and see the children in their classroom, during the lessons. Each hour is 35min long and from Monday to Thursday the children are busy till 15.30. On Fridays lessons finish at 12. There is also a small computer centre in the school and so each student can get familiar with the PC for 10min/week. During the day the children also have different breaks: at 10 and 15 it is tea-time, whereas they have lunch at 12 and dinner at 17. Their diet consists mostly of nsima (a pap of cassava flour), rice, beans, but also chicken, sardine-like fish and other vegetables.
A questo punto é ora di andare a visitare i bimbi nelle rispettive classi, visto che le lezioni sono ancora in corso. In generale, ogni ora dura 35min; dal lunedí al giovedí i bambini sono impegnati fino alle 15.30, mentre il venerdí le lezioni finiscono alle 12. La scuola ha anche un piccolo centro multimediale e gli studenti possono familiarizzare con il computer per 10min alla settimana. Durante la giornata ci sono diverse interruzioni: alle 10 e alle 15 é l’ora del té; alle 12 c’é il pranzo e alle 17 si cena. La dieta consiste per lo piú di nsima (una sorta di polenta di farina di cassava), riso, fagioli, pollo, pescetti tipo sardine e qualche verdura.
The first class we visit is Joyce’s one. There are approximately 20 children and two very good teachers are explaining them the body parts and the 5 senses in a very creative way. All the children respond very well and the lesson is definitely interactive. Joyce is obviously a bit embarrassed by our presence but every now and then she takes part too. After the lesson we have some time to speak with her teacher who tells us that when Joyce joined the school she could hardly write her name, that is why she was sent back to Standard 1. Now she is in Standard 2 and she is still struggling to get to the same (English) level as the other kids, but since the school year is just started she has good hopes. Her English has already dramatically improved, which will hopefully help her in picking up also all the rest.
Come prima, visitiamo la classe di Joyce, che é composta di circa 20 bambini. Al momento due insegnanti apparentemente molto brave, stanno insegnando loro le parti del corpo ed i 5 sensi in modo molto creativo. Tutti gli studenti partecipano attivamente alla lezione che é decisamente interattiva. Joyce é visibilmente imbarazzata dalla nostra presenza e si fa avanti solo di tanto in tanto. Alla fine della lezione parliamo con la sua insegnante che ci spiega che quando l’anno scorso Joyce é arrivata sapeva a malapena scrivere il suo nome. Per questo motivo le hanno fatto ripetere lo Standard 1. Ora é allo Standard 2 e fa ancora fatica a mettersi in pari con gli altri compagni. Comunque il suo livello di inglese é giá migliorato drasticamente e, considerato che l’anno scolastico é appena iniziato, l’insegnante é molto fiduciosa nel fatto che Joyce fará passi da gigante.
We then move to Standard 5, the class where Ramos is in. Here there are approximately 30 kids and the lesson of Agriculture is ongoing. As soon as he sees us, Ramos digs his head into his exercize book and starts writing a lot. Also in this case, at the end of the lesson we have a word with the teachers who, as in the case of Joyce, tells us that Ramos is rather behind as compared to the rest of the class, but he is confident he will manage to catch up with the rest.
Passiamo poi alla Standard 5, la classe di Ramos, che é composta da circa 30 bambini. Non appena ci vede, Ramos si tuffa nel suo quaderno e comincia a scrivere solertemente. La lezione é quella di Agricoltura e alla fine riusciamo a scambiare qualche parola con il professore. Anche in questo caso, ci sentiamo dire che Ramos é piuttosto indietro rispetto al resto della classe, ma si aspettano che riuscirá a recuperare senza problemi.
At last we go to Standard 4, the class of Witness, where the lesson of Story telling is ongoing. This class is used to teach some ethic to the children. Also here there are approximately 30 kids, but the class is soon going to be split in two, since the number of students is too large. Our presence makes Witness freeze in embarrassment and so we quickly leave the class. Also in this case, the teacher later tells us that Witness has to catch up a lot still, since the only subject he excels in is Bible Knowledge.
Per ultimo visitiamo lo Standard 4, la classe di Witness dove al momento c’é la lezione di ‘Racconta storie’ che viene utilizzata per insegnare l’etica. La classe é composta di circa 30 elementi, ma questo é considerato essere un numero troppo alto di studenti e cosí verrá presto divisa in due. Non appena entriamo Witness si immobilizza per l’imbarazzo e quindi ce ne andiamo piuttosto in fretta. Anche in questo caso, l’insegnante ci dice che Witness ha molto da recuperare visto che l’unica materia in cui eccelle é la Conoscenza della Bibbia.
Once the classes are finished it is time to spend some time with Ramos, Joyce and Witness. They arrive running in no time and seem to be extremely happy to see us. We can easily talk in English with all of them, which is a very pleasant surprise. We spend most of the time together, discovering the presents we have for them, having fun with and in front of the camera and also listening to their difficulties at the school because of the material they are still missing (i.e. pens, exercize books, books covers etc.). Luckily most of these things are in the presents we brought for them. We decide however also to arrange for the new uniform with the cashier, since we don’t want them to be too different from the other kids of the school.Le lezioni sono finite per oggi e quindi é ora di trascorrere un po’di tempo con Ramos, Joyce e Witness. Non appena suona la campanella arrivano correndo e molto felici di vederci. Possiamo parlare inglese con tutti e tre senza alcun problema il che é una piacevole sorpresa. Trascorriamo la maggior parte del tempo aprendo i regali che gli abbiamo portato, divertendoci con la macchinetta fotografica e ascoltando le difficoltá che hanno a scuola a causa della mancanza di materiale di studio (es. quaderni, penne, foderine per i quaderni etc). Fortunatamente la maggior parte di queste cose é tra i regali che abbiamo portato loro. Decidiamo anche di pagare per la loro uniforme perché non vogliamo farli essere troppo diversi da tutti gli altri bimbi della scuola.
We definitely need to go if we want to be back in Nkhata Bay before dark, but the children do not seem to be of the same opinion. At the end we agree that we will go after having put the new bed linens on their beds. However, we promise them that we will come back on Sunday and spend again the whole day with them.
Dobbiamo andar via se vogliamo tornare a Nkhata Bay prima che sia buio, ma i bambini non sembrano essere della stessa opinione. Alla fine riusciamo a raggiungere un compromesso: ce ne andremo dopo aver sistemato le loro nuove lenzuola sul letto. Inoltre promettiamo loro di tornare domenica, per trascorrere un’altra giornata insieme.
