Malita lives in the Mablueguma village, on the hills around the lake. The village took its name from the many Blu gum trees which are around. While getting closer to the village we are welcomed by her mum and her grandmother and then we are immediately shown inside the little house they are renting. It is a small hut made mostly of terracotta bricks, plastered with more terracotta. There is no running water and no electricity here and the inside is composed of two small rooms (the bedroom and the storage) and one slightly larger common room. We gather here with the rest of the family: her little sister, her mother with her new companion and his daughter. Immediately some more women arrive, aunts and cousins, curious to meet us.
Malita vive nel villaggio di Mablueguma, sulle colline intorno al lago. Il villaggio deve il suo nome ai numerosi alberi di eucaliptus (Blue gum in inglese) che ci sono in questa zona. Arrivati al villaggio, la mamma e la nonna di Malita ci danno il benvenuto e immediatamente ci conducono all’interno della piccola casa che hanno in affitto. Questa é una capanna fatta con mattoni in terracotta e poi intonacata con la stessa terra. All’interno non ci sono né acqua corrente né elettricitá, due stanzette fungono una da camera da letto e l’altra da ripostiglio. Una stanza leggermente piú grande é quella comune. Ci sediamo tutti insieme in quest’ultima insieme alla famiglia: la sorellina, la mamma, il suo nuovo compagno con la figlia. Immediatamente arrivano altre donne, cugine e zie, curiose di conoscerci.
While chatting with Malita’s mother we get to know her birthday too. The mother does not remember when she was born, but luckily she still has a paper with her vaccinations, which says Malita was born on the 15th oct 2003. From her medical records we also find out that she is deaf and dumb since august 2008 due to complications of meningitis. At that time the doctors advised to take her to the Bandawe school for deaf, the same school she is currently attending… After a Coca Cola it is time to leave to go and meet the next family.
Chiacchierando con la mamma di Malita scopriamo anche quando é il suo compleanno. In realtá la mamma non si ricorda quando é nata, ma fortunatamente ha ancora la ricevuta delle sue vaccinazioni. Qui é scritto che Malita é nata il 15 ottobre 2003. Dal suo libretto sanitario scopriamo anche che é sordo-muta dall’agosto del 2008, in seguito a complicazioni della meningite. A quel tempo i dottori avevano consigliato di mandarla alla Bandawe school per i sordi, la stessa che Malita frequenta ora... Dopo una Coca Cola é ora di andar via, verso la prossima casa.
Ramos
The next stop is at Ramos’s house. He seems to be definitely luckier than Malita. His house is property of his family and is even painted from the outside. His father is not in at the moment, since he is busy selling the fishes he got the night before, but his mum is more than ready to welcome us. There is electricity in the house, but no running water and it is also made up of one main room and two secondary ones. Ramos lives here with his parents, his little sister Ulemu and brother Emmanuel plus two more cousins who lost their parents. A total of 7 people living out the fishing activity of his father. The whole family moved to Nkhata Bay in 1996, because the lake represented a good resource for them. Also here, while chatting and sipping a Coca Cola we come to know that Ramos was born here on the 14th sept 2000.
La sosta seguente é a casa di Ramos, che si presenta decisamente meglio di quella di Malita. La casa é di proprietá della su famiglia ed é perfino dipinta all’esterno. Al momento suo padre non é in casa, perché sta vendendo i pesci pescati la notte prima, ma la sua mamma fa del suo meglio per farci sentire a nostro agio. La casa ha elettricitá, ma non c’é acqua corrente e Ramos vive qui con la sua sorellina Ulemu, il fratello Emmanuel, i genitori e due cugine piú grandi di cui si prendono cura da quando sono rimaste orfane. Un totale di 7 persone che vivono del ricavo della pesca del padre. Originariamente questa famiglia proviene da un altro villaggio, ma si sono trasferiti qui nel 1996 in quanto il lago rappresentava per loro la miglior fonte di sostentamento. Sorseggiando un’altra Coca Cola, scopriamo che Ramos é nato il 14 settembre 2000.
Witness and Joyce live on the other side of the bay as compared with Malita and Ramos. This is an area that, at least apparently, is even more rural, the village of Kakumba
Witness e Joyce vivono dall’altro lato della baia rispetto a Malita e Ramos, in un’area che, almeno apparentemente, é ancora piú rurale, il villaggio di Kakumba.
Witness
Witness lost his parents when he was 8 months old. His grandmother took care of him as good as she could and now he is living with her, his aunt and many other cousins all in the same house. In the course of the years, his aunt had 4 children of her own and then started to take care also of those of her brothers and sisters. Currently they are 12 sharing the same house, with no electricity or running water. They have no chairs, so we sit in the patio outside together with the very talkative aunt and the grandmother, while many children constantly come and go. We know many of them, since they are the same attending the shelter and so it is no problem to feel quickly at ease.
Witness ha perduto entrambi i genitori all’etá di 8 mesi ed é cresciuto con la nonna che si é presa cura di lui come meglio ha potuto. Al momento vive con la nonna, la zia e molti altri cugini. Nel corso degli anni la zia ha avuto 4 bambini e poi ha cominciato anche a prendersi cura di quelli dei suoi fratelli e delle sue sorelle. Al momento ci sono un totale di 12 persone sotto lo stesso tetto, senza elettricitá né acqua corrente. In casa non hanno sedie e cosí ci sediamo nel patio insieme alla zia, piacevolmente chiacchierona, e alla nonna, mentre un nugolo di bambini va e viene in continuazione. Per lo piú sono bimbi dello shelter che giá conosciamo e quindi non é un problema sentirci a nostro agio.The whole family lives on the income generated by the aunt who sells corn and by one of the oldest cousins who is now working at the supermarket. Witness’s aunt really seems to understand the importance of having the possibility to study and tells us that in her family only one of her brothers was given that chance, but then unfortunately passed away, living the whole family stranded. She is also very interested in understanding a bit better who are the donours and asks for the name of the main contributor so that they can prepare a small gift for him/her. She also tells us that Witness was born on the 29th January 2000, basically on a field where hundreds of people where praying to prevent the end of the world, which was believed to be due in that same year. After another Coca Cola and the usual group photos we move on to Joyce’s house.
L’intera famiglia vive grazie ai guadagni della zia che vende mais e di una delle cugine piú grandi che lavora al supermercato. La zia di Witness sembra essere molto consapevole dell’importanza dello studio e ci racconta che nella sua famiglia solo uno dei suoi fratelli ha avuto questa possibilitá. Sfortunatamente questo fratello é poi deceduto molto giovane lasciando l’intera famiglia senza alcun tipo di supporto finanziario. La zia é anche molto interessata a capire meglio chi sono i vari donatori e ci chiede il nome di chi fino ad ora ha contribuito maggiormente, in modo da poter preparare un regalo. Ci racconta anche che Witness é nato il 29 gennaio 2000, praticamente su un campo, dove centinaia di persone stavano pregando per scongiurare la fine del mondo, che si aspettava proprio nel 2000. Dopo aver bevuto un’altra Coca cola e le solite foto di gruppo,ci avviamo verso la casa di Joyce.
Joyce lives basically next door to Witness together with her mum, her grandmother and approximately 14 other children, but only one is her biological brother, Daniel. The house is very simple and it is mostly used as storage for the rice one of her relatives is selling. The mother supports them all, as good as she can by working in a small shop in the town, but living conditions are less than basic. Differently from the rest, Joyce’s mother is not very talkative, but rather shy and she only tells us that Joyce was born on the 12th june 2003 and was very often affected by malaria.
Joyce é praticamente la vicina di casa di Witness e vive insieme alla mamma, la nonna e piú o meno altri 14 bambini di cui uno solo é suo fratello di sangue, Daniel. La casa é estremamente semplice, ma di loro proprietá, e serve per lo piú come magazzino per il riso che viene poi venduto da uno dei suoi lontani parenti. La mamma é l’unica a lavorare in un piccolo negozio in paese e supporta tutti come meglio puó, ma le condizioni in cui vivono rimangono al limite della sussistenza. Diversamente dagli altri, la mamma di Joyce non é particolarmente loquace, ma piuttosto introversa e ci dice solamente che la figlia é nata il 12 giugno 2003 ed é facilmente affetta da malaria.
